Cardboard and polythene is bailed on site and collected by a reprocessor for recycling. Paper is also recycled along with cups and cans then collected when volumes warrant.
A complete waste audit was carried out in early 2007 and as a result our target for recycling was set to 90%. The aim was to increase from 83% recycled in 2006. A result of 91% recycled was achieved in the final quarter of 2007, following the launch of our highly successful ‘Stamp Out Waste’ campaign.
Working with a number of partners to achieve this target and recycling all cups, cans and papers including envelopes, manifests and brochures has produced not only a reduction of on average 6 tonnes per month to landfill, but also a significant increase in the revenue generated from recycling.
Segregation is key to our processes for hitting targets on recycling and reduction of waste to landfill. In this respect, a waste management team working on each shift in the National Distribution Centre is operation to ensure there is no contamination prior to the recycling process.
