Currently, households in the UK send approximately 600 million batteries to landfill every year. This is the equivalent weight of 110 jumbo jets. The overall harm these batteries can do to the environment is long stretching and will remain our legacy for years to come. Businesses should not dispose of batteries in their general waste and they should not be allowed to go to landfill.
From the 1st February 2010 distributors of batteries in the UK are obliged to offer a take back service for portable batteries.
Lyreco have been ISO14001 certificated since 1998 and a large part of maintaining this certification is compliance to current and future environmental legislation. To fulfil this legal obligation and assist the UK targets for battery recycling Lyreco have joined ERP (a registered battery compliance scheme) who will enable our customers to return and recycle their spent portable batteries safely and legally.
To recycle spent batteries, our customers will need to follow this process:
• Contact ERP to request a battery collection box. Boxes are 25 kilos in capacity. They are flat packed flat packed and will be posted out by ERP.
• Larger premises comprising many offices or departments may also request smaller collection point boxes. Spent batteries from these boxes should then be emptied into a 25 kilo collection box on a regular basis.
• When the 25 kilo box is full, call ERP to arrange a suitable collection time. ERP will book collections around other local collections to minimise road miles and related emissions.
Very high volume users of portable batteries may choose to use a collection drum from ERP.
Very low volume users of portable batteries may choose to take them to a local collection point rather than keeping them on premises for prolonged periods. A list of collection points is available through the ERP website. It is anticipated that this will include large retail stores and local council recycling centres.
